LAWSUITS AND LEGAL PROBLEMS

After a number of years, businesses that become successful have occasional legal problems. Lawsuits may get filed in hopes that the successful company will pay out some money to drop the suit. Other people truly believe that they have a grievance to settle, and they want the courts to make it right. Shazam has had a number of legal issues come up over the years, including:

• Tune Hunter Patent Infringement Case: In May 2009, Texas-based Tune Hunter sued Shazam Entertainment (along with ten other companies) over alleged patent infringement. Tune Hunter claimed it filed the patent back in 2005, and it was a very similar music identification system. Shazam was the first defendant to settle Tune Hunter’s claims.

• Digimarc Patent Infringement Suit: In November 2009, Digimarc Corporation filed a lawsuit over patent infringement against Shazam Entertainment. In June 2010, in Beaverton, Oregon, Digimarc dismissed its complaint. Instead, Digimarc and Shazam discussed ways to work together.

• Blue Spike Patent Infringement Complaint: On August 9, 2012, Blue Spike, LLC, filed an infringement complaint in Texas against Shazam Entertainment. This is a claim for patent infringement. As of early 2014, no judge had yet been assigned to the case.

At any given time around the world, different people can be working on the same invention, totally unaware of anyone else working on it. When a company is built around an invention, it is to be expected that some disagreements over patents will arise. It is one of the trials and tribulations of being in business.
